There's Wireless Tether, which is free but you have to be rooted.

In the Thunderbolt rooting sub forum there are stickied posts explaining how to root. Before you start, read the posts and understand the process. Rooting will wipe your phone so consider why you want to root before proceeding. Good luck.

Also, make sure you understand how to unroot in case you need to need to return your phone for any reason.

BTW, has anyone noticed the coincidence between the free hotspot scheduled to end on 6/15 and the new update scheduled to download OTA starting 6/15? My guess is the new update also includes whatever is needed to start the paid hotspot service.

I was thinking the same thing.

For those of us that have used/tried it for the last couple of months it would be nice to know what our actual usage was for future decisions as to if we want it or not.

Wireless hotspot still works with the leaked update.

But it's different too, I heard. No longer says 'free' or something like that?

You can view your usage on your Verizon bill. Though I do not think it breaks out the hotspot usage.

No it doesn't say anything at all. It just works.

Personally I think Verizon should extend it till the end of summer in compensation for the whole mr1 disaster lol

I asked a VZW rep about this yesterday when I went in to get our iPhone 4 all set up. He had no idea and there has been no word. And this guy seemed to know more than most of them...lol!

I find it really freaking unbelievable that it is June now and VZW still has not announced (or maybe even figured out?) hot spot pricing. I mean seriously, is the whole department that deals with that on an extended vacation or what?

It's really kinda pizzing me off!

Called Verizon today and asked about this.

Yeah, they DO plan to stop the free hot spot feature on June 15th.

No... she had NO IDEA what the cost will be if you wish to continue for the feature!

    Rather strange.....

    I whined on Twitter:
Free hotspot access for VZW Thunderbolt supposedly ends in 2 days, still can't find pricing info anywhere. Including from Verizon. WTF?

    Verizon answered:
Pricing will be sent to you via text on/after 6/15. I take it that you enjoyed the feature? ^AH

I'm glad that someone answered, but it still would be nicer to know what the pricing will be BEFORE 6/15!

They probably haven't finalized yet that's why there are barely and leaks about the pricing. Hopefully we get another month or two

I hope its either cheaper or has a larger limit. Haven't decided if I want to pay for the hotspot when I get my tablet.

Figures that the free hotspot promotion ends one day before I'm supposed to get 4g in my town........

I know this will probably NEVER happen but I would pay 20-30 bucks for 10gigs.

I am a rooted user, and I am unable to use the WIRELESS TETHER APP that u cant find on the app market (u still can find it if you go into airplane mode then enable wifi, then open the market and it will show up, kinda wierd that you have to do it that way) .... the only app that works perfectly and IS avail on the market without tricks to find it is BARNACLE WIFI TETHER app... just an FYI and I personally like BARNACLE WIFI TETHER better than the other one... have fun

Obviously I'm wrong if no one has any clue, but I read $20 for 2GB months ago. Guess it was a widespread rumor.

Just found it on PcMag.com...."An extra $20/month buys you 2GB of data for a laptop or other device to use via USB or Wi-Fi tethering. The phone's hotspot mode supports eight devices rather than the usual five (the faster to use up your 2GB allotment with."

And I don't usually read PCMag, so I'm sure above info was covered elsewhere.

That is what people think it may be but they never put out LTE hotspot prices. That price may be for 3G but im not sure.

As I've stated in another thread, the pre plus/pixie started at $29-39 for unlimited data until made free. That was for 3g, so still should be looking for those prices for 4g unlimited.

Here is a quick copy and paste I did from our Verizon Wireless intranet here at work.

    ----------------------------------------------
"The MHS/MBBC promotion expires on June 15, 2011. Effective June 16, 2011, a monthly subscription fee (pricing after 06/15/2011 - To Be Determined) for MHS and MBBC will be applicable for customers who choose to continue using the service. "

"After June 15, 2011, ThunderBolt and DROID Charge by Samsung customers who wish to continue to use MHS and MBBC will be prompted upon initiating a MHS / MBBC session to self provision the MHS / MBBC for 4G LTE Smartphone option.
The 3G Smartphone MHS/MBBC $20/2GB option will not be available on 4G LTE Smartphones. "

    ----------------------------------------------

So I just copied and pasted that for you all. Its the 13rd, only two days left and so pricing is still up in the air, I guess we'll find out tomorrow. : /
