Lately when i go to respond to a text it's really slow to bring up the keyboard. This is in the stock messaging app.

I'm thinking it's because one of my chat threads is probably thousands of texts long by now. I don't want to lose the texts so I'm thinking back it up and then delete it abd see if that works.

That said what's the best option for sms backup?

I have used sms backup and restore before. Seemed to work well for me.

For the record I ended up using SMS Backup+. Worked great and went right to me gmail. Messaging app is running smooth again. Apparently 10,000 messages is to much for it ti handle.

Using hangouts for SMS has finally fixed the Android OS SMS problem of slowing down with lots of texts for me 😊
