Default kitkat update-where did all the color go?

I installed the 4.4.2 update a couple days ago. Since then, all the color is gone from the Notification Bar icons. They are all white, all the time. The colors where helpful, since many of the icons are very similar and the color itself sometimes communicates status information. Any ideas on how to restore this.

That is baked into the ROM. You might be able to change them, but you would need to be rooted and use Xposed Franework with a gravity box module.

But I haven't read anything about this on any of the forums. Surely I'm not the only person who noticed. Is there supposed to be some benefit to this change?

I'm sure it was noticed when KitKat first came out, when reviewing the N5.
