Taking US verizon phone out of country

I have a verizon samsung galaxy s4.
Comments here indicate it should be UNlocked.
I'm taking a trip to Panama soon.
I planned to get/insert a local sim so I'd have service there.
Is this a workable plan ?
Are there any specific settings that need to be tweaked to do this ?

As long as the phone is SIM unlocked you should be fine. Below are the supported radio bands for the Verizon version of the S4. You might need to check and see what companies are there and what they operate on.
