Default Verizon family data share plan pricing info

Seems like a terrible plan that will save no one any money (or a marginal amount if at all), and make Verizon a lot. I have 10gb for 5gb price and my gf on my account has 2gb, I hit close to my limit regularly while she uses half, this plan would potentially save us $20 while giving us 2 less gb.

Why would you pay $100 for 10 GB when you could pay $50 for 1GB and get each additional 2GB for 10 bucks. You end up with 11 GB for $100. Unless you only get to purchase an additional 2 GB once.

Seems like this is a good option if you are around the 2 GB range and have at least four people in your family. Then you are coming in at $65 per person. Throwing in the text messaging means nothing to me since I already use Google Voice, but, it might for some. And, I guess it'd be nice to not have to give people a second number, then rely on them to use it.

But, I'm not about to go out and have a family just to save $10 a month.

Damn, these prices are high! Currently I have 1 smartphone ($30) and 1 tablet ($20) with 4 feature phones (hubby plus 3 kids) on my plan. So, let's say I want to get everyone on the data plan. I use around 500 MB/mon, so let's use that as an average and go with the 6GB plan:

    Base charge : 80
    5 phones : 200
    Tablet : 10
    ------------------------
    290

    Yikes!

    Current:

    700 minutes : 80
    1 smartphone: 40
    4 feature phones: 40
    1 tablet : 20
    ----------------------------------
    180

I could add on 4 indiv smartphone $30 charges to get to 300 and have a ton more data, plus keep my unlimited if I upgrade soon.

I wonder if I'll still get my $20 off my primary line. All the numbers above are before discounts & taxes.

Hubby doesn't really want a smartphone and my youngest doesn't really need one. Maybe I'll just get 1 each for my older kids and go up only to 240. I'm really disappointed in this plan. Maybe it's time to leave VZW, even though they have the best network around here by far.

I think that this would be a good idea if it wasn't forced on you. Some people could save money on this plan but for those of us that are power users. We are just SOL.

In case people are confused. After the 28th if you want a subsidized phone...you will be forced into a capped plan. If you want to keep your unlimited plan, you must pay full retail price if you want to buy a phone from Verizon.

This seems only worth it if you are on the lower end of the spectrum, if you use a lot of data you will get charged a lot of money...

I'm more concerned about the forced unlimited data and messaging. My wife and I both have smartphones and the 550 minute loyalty plan for $60. We each have a 250 message plan for $5 and unlimited data. There is no way this plan would do anything but cost us. Because of free mobile to mobile, we bareley use 200 minutes and 100 texts combined. I use anywhere from 2-5GB a month and she uses maybe 1GB. These prices suck.

Are they removing the current family plan - family plan for voice/text and add on data indiv per line? That can be cheaper, depending on your usage characteristics.

Exactly. We use very little voice.

I just priced out 5 smartphones on Sprint. Unlim data & text, 1500 voice (we use maybe 400/mon) = 260. Now, granted, they are nowhere up to VZW with their LTE rollout, but that's WAY WAY cheaper than VZW.

I have not read anything that you wont have the option to continue with family share plans as they are but I imagine they mean to eliminate those altogether, but Im speculating.

The only thing that is certain is that unlimited data as a feature will no longer exist as an option to those upgrading after the 28th.

    Full plan break down.

I currently have 2 smartphones on unlimited data. I use 5-7 gigs my wife maybe 500mb. We are on 1400 minute family plan with two dumb phones. One of which I must pay 10 a month for 25 mb (sux). Is it possible to keep my unlimited line separate from the rest of them since they would only use about 5 gigs combined.

I know. I need to make this decision quickly. I see my choices as:
    1. Stay on the voice family plan. Upgrade for me and keep my unlim and add two smartphones for my girls.
    2. Switch to this stupid plan and get very little data (which is what I want) and way to omuch voice (which I don't want).
    3. Jump to Sprint. AT&T has always sucked around here (NJ, greater NY metro).

I could do #1 and then always switch to #2 later, I'm sure. I need to decide if I want a new contract to keep my unlim now, tho.

What is the point of having these awesome 4G smartphones if they cap our data? If the offered 5 or 10 gig plans at a reasonable price it would be OK, but 2 gigs? Seriously

Verizon will lose alot of customers, I am not even a heavy user and I use 4-5 gigs a month

That sucks. 40 per phone seems absurd...like the move to unlimited minutes and texting, and the tiers don't seem too bad, but the outer device prices are straight bull. They screwed the pooch here. Think it might be time to seriously look at sprint...

I don't have unlimited data so as long as I can keep my current plan I'm fine. I just hope they don't force me to change when I upgrade which isn't until next August.

$50 for the first gig and $5 for each additional? That blows. Paying for unlimited voice/text when my current 450 minutes and 1000 texts are more than enough sucks too. Basically what this does to me is raise my pre-tax cost from $80 for unlimited data to $110 for 4gb. Guess I'm pre-ordering today and will see what the landscape looks like in 2 years. After boycotting AT&T for 15 years, it might be time to give them another try.

Looks like I'll be paying full price for my next phone..I mean, most people who use these phones use them for data, that's why we buy them...I don't see how anyone would be able to share a 1 gig plan, I'm sure its possible for some but not many..and a that price? I can see, like someone said, a 5 or 10 gig plan at a reasonable price, I don't know, this is ridiculous.

Wow! Do these plans suck!! Here's what my bill looks like today:

    Nationwide Talk Share 700 $50
    Line 1
    Voice $9.99
    Unlimited Data $29.99
    Line 2
    Voice $9.99
    2GB Data $29.99
    1000 Txt $9.99
    Line 3
    Voice $9.99
    1000 Txt $9.99

Grand Total: $163.86 (after taxes and 21% corporate discount on primary line)

The new plan would jack my costs up to $180 for 4GB of shared data. Add in taxes (~$5.20 per line) and we're up to $195.59. Not sure how they'll apply the corp discount, so let's guess they'll take it off the primary line ($40) and the whole data plan ($70). That makes for a $23.10 discount, subtracted from the total give me a grand whopping new bill of $172.49

In other words, an increase of $8.63 to drop my unlimited plan and share 4GB of data with my wife, but also adds text messaging to my line. Crappy, ty choices for me since I use Google Voice and don't need text messaging, my wife doesn't go over 2GB and we talk about 250 mins a month.

Think we can get out of big reds clutches via breach of contract on this? I have three lines, mine is up for renewal july 7th. When I go upgrade my phone they will tell me i have to change my plan on all three lines, or cough up 700 for the unsubsidized phone. Is this enough to be able to walk away from all three contracts? This is bull. I have four gigs and unlimited at sixty and this is what they offer me to switch to? ing irate right now.

No they will just make your line buy the capped individual data. The option to retain your unlimited data feature will be gone.

The Data Share plans are an option to the current Family plans.

No, because they will tell you that you can "upgrade" to 2GB for $30 for your new phone, which will not affect the other phones/contracts

Exactly. Everyone is calculating based on different tiers of data. But there is going to be overages. Sharing data? Are you effing kidding?

Forget ever using streaming apps again.

Thing is, I get to decide what is good enough, not them. I wont take 2 gb, and I wont pay full price. I signed up for new every two and they can either honor that or let me walk. They offer the double your data rate of 4gb and I might think about staying. I'm sure there are plenty of other people out there in the same boat as me, think its time to join up and call a lawyer if they won't let those of us unhappy with their offers walk from any secondary lines on a family plan where the main line is up for renewal. Why should they be able to have it both ways? I either have to pay the same for a hell of a lot less, or sign up for a terrible ing plan and renew for two years? Or I can have the privilege of coughing up full price for a phone (I signed up for new every two for a reason...) and keeping what I have until they decide not to honor it anymore. This is horse , plain and simple.
