[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

If I opt for an iphone (which I do not want) it gives me an option for No Change. But if I go for a Droid Maxx or LG G2 it forces me to select the Share Everything Network Access Fee.
Hmm, that sucks.

You could get the iPhone and sell it (you could net $400) and then use that to buy the Droid Maxx or LG G2 full price. The Droid Maxx is $680 full retail at amazon, so you would be paying $280 and no tax (unless you live where amazon charges tax) and no upgrade fee for it. The LG G2 is $605 full retail at amazon, so you would be paying $205 for it.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

He stayed on the line and did the ESN swaps of my dummy basic phone as the Best Buy guy did the alternate upgrades.

Very confusing, but the Verizon tech stayed on the phone with me and the best buy guy and walked him through the process. He was able to activate them all by resetting the included SIMs so they could be provisioned properly. Best Buy system did give a warning that unlimited data would be lost, but the Verizon rep instructed him to just ignore it, because he was taking care of it on Verizon's end.
So you called Verizon while you were at Best Buy? And the Best Buy guy did this? That is simply incredible because I believe Best Buy lost its commission on those phones by doing the switches like that.

The Verizon guy said the alternate upgrade in best buy's system is the same as the transfer upgrade in the My Verizon system, yet different than the alternate upgrade coding that customer care does over the phone.
Good to know!

So far, so good. My advice when calling Verizon to accomplish this--talk to Tech Support and get a manager. They actually understand the systems and what can be accomplished.
Yep! I love the tech support people! To get through to them, you say that you are having trouble making/receiving calls. They can do account stuff for you, too.

Everything went like clockwork once I had the Verizon guy agree what I was doing was in fact possible. All the other Verizon reps are misinformed and/or lying. This method still works great as of 12/26/13.
I am amazed you could get it all done in one fell swoop! Kudos!!!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

As far as total protection insurance is concerned if I was to purchase a note 3 on a dummy line/tiered line or transfer upgrade from unlimited line to non unlimited line does the TEP follow the device regardless what line was used to originally purchase it? Thanks !

I was finally able to do it with the LG G2.

I kept all the screenshots. I had it delivered to my house. I will try to do it with my active 4g lte sim card and see what happens from there.

Not from what I have been told by Verizon and Asurion. It stays with the line.

But you can add the insurance for 30 days after purchase. So as long as you switch the phone to the unlimited data line within 30 days of purchase, you can add the insurance to the unlimited data line.

Please keep us posted b/c that would be awesome if it works to keep unlimited data by using a previously activated 4G LTE SIM card.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

I will do. The eta for the delivery is 1/10/14 so it will take a while to get it but if it works then it will be worth the wait. I will keep everyone updated.

Thanks for your help! Outside of Asurion, best buys protection and square trade are there any other insurance options/companies for phones? ( excluding CC insurance, renters insurance) ?

How often does verizon, AT&T etc have open enrollment?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

after following thread for hours, thought i was ready to try it, but need a little advice. I went to BB today and got a new 5s activated on existing dummy line. Now i'm trying to put the old phone back on the dummy line, on MyVerizon. The confusion comes in when it required me to select a new data plan for my dummy phone. It seems i do have the 2gb plan with the iphone 5s, but i'm not sure if I should select a new data plan to put old dummy phone back on the account. my options are 75mb 2gb 5gb etc. If i have to select a new data plan for the dummy line, will i be able to cancel the data afterwards? If not, then maybe get the $10 plan (75mb) and honor it for 2 years even though i dont need that? Advice appreciated.

yes, just block the data on the line.

If not, then maybe get the $10 plan (75mb) and honor it for 2 years even though i dont need that? Advice appreciated.
Pick the $10 plan then block data. It should drop off then. If not, call and have it removed.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks Day Thyme, It seems to have worked perfectly. I'll continue through the process now of getting the 5s on an unlimited line, replacing the 4. Then, per your advice, repeat the process 2 more times so that my wife and I have new phones, and we sell a third 5s. I will post an update later.

Verizon just had an open enrollment that ended 12/2/13. I think they have one in the spring, too, but am not sure. Try posting another thread about this. Others more knowledgeable than me may respond.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Seems to be working fine, but concerned about it showing an additional savings of $6/mo on unlimited. showing 23.99 rather than 29.99 on unlimited data for new phone.

does this sound right. cant see where i might have messed up?

Maybe you have a employee discount on your account? Not sure.

Nothing this lucky has ever happened to me. Like the other poster said, is there some sort of corporate discount on the line?

That looks like an employee discount, I pay that amount for my plan with a %20th discount

Yup, corporate discount applies to unlimited data but not the $30 tiered data plan. The $50 tiered data plan or higher does qualify for the corporate discount.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

I have gotten west coast reps and I am east coast. After 11pm, I tell them I am having trouble making calls and I get tech support. Tech support can do things to your account, too.

OP says his first call, first line rep did it for him. I have never gone this route so that was what I was basing it on as well as other posters who have claimed the same thing.

They need to know the code to do it, it is not a click. But they have a way to find the codes for the old plans.

Sounds like either you get lucky with a first line rep who can find the code and can give unlimited data back to you, or you are in for a lot of work. As I said, it was a lot of work for my friend but she eventually prevailed. Hopefully you will, too.

How do you get a hold of a tech after 11pm? I called at 11:30, 12:00, etc. and I enter my number in but it doesn't give me any option to talk with anyone. It only gives me like 3 options: press #1 if your phone has been stolen, and so on. But it says call back our hours are 6am-11pm. What # are you calling and what prompts are you going through?

Also, everyone read this post: http://forums.imore.com/verizon/274...y-unlimited-data-please-help.html#post2159747 Is this guy for real?

Just went through the same thing yesterday Was offered the 6GB in exchange for my unlimited and I continue to pay my $30 for data and original nationwide 1400 minutes unlimited txt for the family plan I'm on. Wish I would have known about the BestBuy pricing and I would have bought from there instead of the Verizon store.

Surprisingly I'm back on my unlimited plan with the new phone. While upgrading another line that currently had a basic phone, the representative said that for people switching from their unlimited plan to the 6GB they can go back to the unlimited after a month. I persuaded her to go ahead and place it back on my line right now. Also, for the basic line I was upgrading and 1 other recently upgraded last month (both Galaxy S4), they were able to use apply a BlackBerry Unlimited Data plan to them and it worked. So currently I have the 3 lines with my $30 unlimited data and the other 2 with $20 unlimited data. Didn't want to chance anything by placing my line on the BB unlimited and hopefully everything is still in place by the end of the cycle. Maybe you'll have luck with your representative as well.
