[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just called Verizon. The rep explained that the new policy is as announced - no transferring upgrades from a non-phone device - but that as long as it is a phone line-to-phone line switch, there is no waiting period at all.

Which is inline with what we have been discussing for a while now. The no transferring of upgrades between different device types is explicitly written on Verizon's website and on various news outlets.

It doesn't really affect this thread since plans with unlimited data don't allow tablets or hotspots on them.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Activate the phone on the dumb or tiered data line first. Instructions should have come with the phone, but you can call them or do it online or go to a store to activate. Once the phone has been activated on the correct line for upgrade, you can move the phone to your wife's line but you would need a new sim to do that. You could do that in store, online, or over the phone

I already activated the SGS3 yesterday (on the non-unlimited line) with the supplied instructions. It was the moving to wife's line with a new sim I was unclear about. If I can do that online, that's what I will do.

Thanks!

I wouldn't take that poster seriously. He has posted misinformation and not provided anything to back it up.

Those were my thoughts as well.

You can, but if you don't have a new spare sim, then they will send it to you

Hmm on a Nationwide Talk & Text Plan (1400 min, unlimited text for all), but when I go to add a line (aka the "dummy line"), it is semi-forcing me to change plans by forcing me to choose a texting plan for each line? Is there a secret way to add lines without making any changes?

When I go to add a device, and then get to select a plan, by default unlimited texting is picked since that is what I already have. Then above that in blue it says select a plan for each line. If I click that, it takes me to another screen where I can select a different text messaging line for each line. But above that it in blue it says I want unlimited messaging for each line. If I click on that, it takes me back to the screen where you can select unlimited texts for all lines.

Please provide link to policy change. Thanks

I don't have a link. I work in store for verizon and I am just letting you All know what we've been told and what I've seen happen with customers accounts. You can argue with me all you want but I'm trying to help you so that all these people reading this don't change ESNs immediately and then next month have their unlimited drop off because verizon caught that their alternate upgrade was 'done wrong'. I'm a salesperson and hate having upgrade restrictions too so I like to look on these forums to see what solutions people have. The policy is that you can do an alternate upgrade but that the unlimited data plan can't be transferred. This was changed in the fall. In store, we would still do what you guys are doing. A regular upgrade on anger eligible line and then an ESN switch. We were informed in March that this is no longer allowed because alternate upgrades should be processed the 'correct way' and as you all know, would drop you to 2GB. To ensure that sales people follow this, we do not get paid on sales that have alternate upgrades processed the 'wrong way'. It is not guaranteed that it will automatically drop off because obviously corporate verizon cannot monitor everyone's account all the time, but if you call tech support or customer service and they notice you did this they can switch it to 2GB. I have see. This happen many times which is why I'm telling you this. Waiting the 30 days is just a safety period so that we've been instructed to give customers so we have been guaranteed that it won't be dropped off if you wait that period.

Sorry if that's confusing. Again, you can not believe me if you want but I'm just relaying what we've been told and what I've seen. I'm not a fan of these policies at all either.

Source: I work at a verizon store.

no offense to you personally, but I have found the absolute *worst* place to get information regarding tricky issues like this is employees who work at VZW corporate stores. Perhaps you are just parroting bad information handed down to you by managers, but its still bad information. Repeating bad/false information for whatever reasons is bad enough, but combine that with rude behavior and flat out lying has me taught me to avoid going to corporate stores unless absolutely necessary. It is truly astounding the difference in customer service one can get from Verizon when comparing phone reps and in store reps. I have yet to have a bad experience over the phone while almost all of my in store experiences are trying at best and infuriating at worst.

My experience exactly. I think it is because over the phone they can be recorded and you can get asked to participate in a survey about the phone reps.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Well that's why I come to the forums to see what other people have done to solve their problems. I'm not saying what they've told us is set in stone, which is frustrating enough, but I just wanted to add to the forum what we've been told directly about the unlimited data and what I've seen happen. I come here because I don't want customers to lose their unlimited and am here looking for ways for them to keep it. But with the upgrade/ESN thing I've seen it get dropped permanently. I'm not trying to argue, I'm just honestly letting you know what we are told. It's obviously bad enough for them to crack down and refuse to pay us on alternate upgrades 'done wrong'.

Which is of course the real issue. We don't lose unlimited, but you lose the sale. That's between you and your employer.

I'm completely guessing here but I'm betting the fact that you get paid for someone upgrading their phone (seems completely illogical to me), combined with shift managers, store managers, regional managers, etc etc. physical store red tape that is the direct cause of this dichotomy between in store customer service and over the phone service. Each manager in the bureaucratic chain is being graded on some made up metrics by higher ups on the chain, and they therefor create bogus "policies" which are fed down the line and then repeated (falsely) to customers in order to meet quotas/goals/etc.

The feeling I get walking into a Verizon wireless store nowadays is extremely close to the same feeling I get walking into a car dealership. Employees are only concerned with how quickly they can turn you into a payday for themselves.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Pretty much. Anyone that you speak to over the phone doesn't work for verizon though. They're third party call centers. It's the same with them too. You can hear one thing from one person, hang up, call back, and get another answer from someone else. I salvage my soul working in sales by helping customers. That's why I love these forums.

Me, too.

I doubt that. I have received everything from unlimited data after verizon stopped offering it to new customers to a free network extender from the reps on the phone. No way in heck do I believe that the reps who gave me those things were not verizon employees.

One guy on this thread got unlimited data back after losing it by doing an upgrade on an individual line that had unlimited data simply by asking a phone rep to put it back. Verizon would not give that authority to a 3rd party vendor employee.

You only have 6 posts and all of them on this thread to tell us we can't do what we have proven we can do and which not incoincidentaly would cause an in-store rep to lose a sale. You haven't "loved" these forums for very long and you aren't here to salvage your soul, lol!

I am not arguing that that wasn't what you were told, just saying that I haven't seen any documentation on it. If you could, please ask your boss to see the memo or whatever that states this. Take a picture and post it here.

Personally, I would consider this to be an illegal bait and switch if this happened to me. I have had Verizon pull illegal bait and switch on me a few times already so I wouldn't put it past them. But I have been able to get the matter resolved each time with a bit of a hassle.

If you do an alternative upgrade as described by Verizon then yes, you would lose unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE. Which is probably what you seeing. But i have never heard of anyone transferring the upgrade to another line and losing unlimited. If it is happening, then people would be up in arms.

Good point. An alternative upgrade as described by Verizon does not involve the transfer of the upgrade. The key is to transfer the upgrade from the unlimited data line to a line without unlimited data and to activate the phone on the line that received the transfer before you switch the phone to the unlimited data line.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

They are third party. We have two verizon call centers in my city. They are a company called Alorica here. Not really sure why you're trying to argue with me on this when this is so easy to prove. I have posted in other forums than this one, been reading for a while, but never felt the need to start posting. And pardon me for being officially trained on things. I apologize. You must have been top of your class at the university of google searches.

So verizon gives a third party the ability to send me a free network extender at no cost to me but at a significant cost to Verizon? Not buying it.

If so, all I have to say is I prefer the 3rd party reps to the in-store reps. The in-store reps only argued with me that it was my imagination that I was dropping calls. The phone reps sent me a free network extender.
