When you say NY, do you mean NYC or the rest of the state?
And if it is NYC, do you mean Manhattan or the unimportant boroughs?? (I have family in da Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens...so let's not cry...and if you're in Staten Island...well, tuff ----. LOL. )
I am going to have to visit Manhattan sometime after work and just play around with my Note 2. There is no way Verizon's Network sucks that much...

Just to close this up, I ended up on a support call and after resetting my SIM card we came to the conclusion this is being caused by network congestion. I am regretting sticking with VZ, but at least I don't have any regrets giving up the unlimited data, as it would be impossible to ever reach the limit on my current plan with the existing network - and saves $10 per month. Glad I have wifi.

There is network congestion, but then there is exaggeration. Times Square, Downtown, I go all over Manhattan and I don't experience this dial-up experience you are trying to sell. I'm also in Jersey, a spit's distance from NYC...still no network congestion.
I did some digging - I am hardly alone with these issues, without exaggeration. Apparently VZ is deploying AWS LTE to combat the issue and most of their phones (like the MotoX) will be able to use it via firmware update.
Thanks for the info on the unlimited data, my capped plan costs less and has unlimited minutes and text - which I was over constantly. I would have swapped the plan anyhow, I always thought it was wasteful I was paying for unlimited use of my 500 kbps data (my average 3G speed) network.

But if I was going to get rid of unlimited data, I would have sold my line on eBay and made some coin on it instead of just letting it go...but to each his own, I guess. Just don't turn into those unlimited data haters and turn into a Stockholm Syndrome victim by saying you love your capped data plan and hate those still with unlimited...I, in return, will not insult you or your capped data plan. (laughs.)
You are missing my point. I was paying more for unlimited data and being forced to use wifi for data, because the unlimited data pipe was useless. The "capped" plan included unlimited minutes and texts which worked out better for me (and cost me 25 less per month). There is nothing wrong with unlimited data plans - and I stream music constantly - via wifi as my 3G and now 4g network will not support high quality streaming. I swapped my plan out when the new plans were announced - it bothered me I had to pay $15 extra to connect to work email - the "business unlimited plan" was a crock.
If it worked for me, I would opt out of wifi via FIOS and use 4G via hotspot at this point - but VZ's network sucks. Laugh at me because I stuck with VZ as a carrier, that I can accept.

You guys are lucky I'm still at 0.17 Mbps in the region I live in (Fargo, ND).
That's not the whole town but where I live and work. Verizon told me on Friday night that it's being worked on.
(Back story: I live near two Verizon Corporate stores and two other retailers. They told me that the network is so over loaded here that they weren't able to activate new phones in the store. So, they put up a new tower just in the stores but that's it.
That irritated me. They will cover the store only.
The main reason it's so busy is because of the main shopping mall and the entire shopping district is here.
I would think that they are working on additional towers or... something but I don't know. They already have two main towers on the same street within 20 blocks or so of each other. Maybe they can't do anything more.

And today I have zip-nada-no service in the Flatiron District. Today is worse than usual, but it's only in the last week or so that I even saw speeds above 1 mbps during business hours--and I assumed that was because work was slow around the Thanksgiving holiday. Throughout the fall, my speedtests were routinely in the <1 mbps range (3G was usually faster).
Those of you who say VZW ain't that bad, well, you're lucky you're neighborhood is getting service. Unfortunately, that seems to be true for every other carrier in NYC as well, where an avenue one way or the other can be the difference between great service and nothing, so I'm still on VZW...for now.
