Default Verizon: Unlimited data Plan - How Much Longer?

I am planning to take the extra steps to keep my UDP. Does anyone know if Verizon can just terminate UDP at anytime and place you on a limited plan? I would not want to go through the trouble and expense if there is a chance of it being eliminated.

There have been no announcements about Verizon ending UDP for customers who don't use their upgrades who end up being month to month.

See this thread: what happens if I buy S4 at full retail and Verizon kills off unlimited data a month later?

    Repeating my post from there:

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I don't think Verizon is going to force anyone off unlimited data anytime soon regardless if you're off contract. If they tried, it would be a public relations nightmare. Anyway by most accounts, the majority of people are voluntarily going with the shared plans (and giving up unlimited), so they really don't have a lot of incentive to kill off unlimited any time soon. Instead, they'll probably just let natural attrition take its course.

Bottom line, yes it's a bit of a gamble as anything is possible, but unlimited data on Verizon is still the holy grail in the cell industry IMO considering their network coverage. So by hook or crook it would be in your best interest to keep it anyway you can (until they pry it from your cold dead hands! ). My two cents anyway.

Does Verizon still offer the 6gb plan to unlimited data users? And can you upgrade the phone at a discounted price using the 6gb plan?

AFAIK, yes. I believe this either has to be done in-store or over the phone. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

Personally, I don't think that they would outright kill UDP. At most they might make a new feature(such as volte) incompatible with the UDP plans, but would allow you to keep UDP so long as you use a compatible device.

Similar to how the old digital choice plans are not compatible with 3g or 4GLTE devices but if you used a 1x phone that was compatible then you could keep the plan ad infinitum. Keep in mind though that those on the digital choice unlimited plan, should they choose to upgrade to a current device, must choose a current plan. Meaning that they would be unable to get the legacy individual or family plans which allowed for UDP.

Or they could treat UDP like they do non GPS devices. You can maintain a non gps device ad infinitum, but if you ever deactivate it, you wouldn't be able to reactivate it or any other non gps device .

Yes they are offering..and you can upgrade once...

after the 2 year contract is over, and want to upgrade, you will be forced to either pay full price for the 6GB plan, or choose the 2GB plan at the same price

Is this confirmed? If so there's really no reason to let go of Unlimited...

I don't think we're at a point yet for anyone on the 6GB loyalty plan to be upgrading...

    Straight from Verizon reps

I was going to do it, I talked to a few different ones, and they all told me the same thing. I asked them if I did this, when i try to upgrade again, can I keep my 6GB at the same price, and they said no

Asking a Verizon rep is unreliable.

That settles it for me. I was thinking about going the route of the 6 GB plan, not now. I will buy the phone and take my chances on UDP staying around for a while. I am satisfied with my current plan as far as minutes and data. The new plans do not fit my needs and would cost me more. Thanks for all of the responses. I learned a lot in a short amount of time. I plan to call the 800 number and see if I get the same answer.

Verizon cfo isn't really more reliable. Please note that what Shammo said is incorrect.

I understand, but if they are saying no, would you really want to take that chance?

I wouldn't take that chance. Although a Verizon rep did tell me the Loyalty Plan would be around for many upgrades but again they could just say it's no longer offered at any time.

I'd rather not worry about data so anything less than 5 GB at $30 isn't reasonable IMO. 2 GB is just enough to check email but don't even try to stream music. Like what's the point?

My point is even the cfo can give inaccurate information. The day after Shammo said this, Verizon issued a statement contradicting what the cfo said.

I highly doubt that a rep would know how long any plan would be around and upgrades be allowed on that plan.

I have used more than 2gb on email alone but I get a lot of emails

The Verizon Max plan is still available but it's a nightmare trying to set it up with multiple lines if any lines do not have UDP and it's apparently very difficult for them to figure out how to coordinate it with Edge (for the contract cancellation feature). We gave up and I just kept my UDP because Verizon was contradicting themselves from one question to the next and I was adamant that they not make any changes until I was absolutely clear on the process and end result of what we were trying to do.

I called today for my dad and I asked about the 6 GB plan and future upgrades. She said that the plan isn't going anywhere and you can upgrade again and again without losing it.

True? Don't know. Just validating what you said about reps being incorrect at times. To her credit she was clear by saying "from how the training makes it appear" rather than guaranteeing it like most seem to do.
