Default Can a generic GPE edition phone be used on verizon?

I'm hoping someone can clear something up for me. I thought verizon was a cdma carrier and you had to have a specific phone set up for verizon cdma to be able to use it on their network. I have been looking into buying a new phone and have had several people tell me their generic unlocked GS5 would work on verizon because it has the bands to work on all carriers. So is my assumption on CDMA technology invalid now? Does the 4G LTE work on GSM but the 3g work on cdma....if so how does that work if you don't have 4g service? Any help clearing this up would be appreciated.

It HAS to be Verizon branded. They will not activate anything else

    You can't use a non-Verizon S5 on Verizon.

If I am going from a verizon s4 to a verizon s5 can I just put my sim card in and go or do I actually have to call to "activate" it?

You can do a straight sim swap. Do not need to do anything else

Would I still get charged an "activation fee"? I'm assuming somehow they would know the phone was working and on my account?

No, you are only charged an activation fee on a new line of service. They would read the phone info once you place the sim in it and know what device you are currently using

My new S5 arrives tomorrow. It has never been activated on an account so I can still just pop in the sim from my S4 and be good to go even though it's never been "activated" on an account?

That is correct. I have done it before. People who do the best buy loophole to keep unlimited data have to do the same thing.
