Verizon Divestiture

I am one of the many people effected by the Verizon divestiture. As of about the end of this year, I am apparently required to leave Verizon and join AT&T. Except I really, really, really don't want to do that. AT&T simply doesn't have the hardware available on Verizon, and in my area, doesn't have the service, either.

What are people doing to avoid being effected by the divestiture? Is it possible to join AT&T as required, and then just drop their service and sign back up with Verizon? I can't be the only person who's looking for a way around this, but I've found very few people talking about solutions. Help!

People I know with Alltel in my area and being converted to AT&T are dropping AT&T and signing on with Verizion.
I believe, but not sure, they have to be with AT&T for one day. The number is switched to AT&T so it causes some problems to keep the number with Verizon, but not impossible (I have heard).
