Samsung Galaxy JT(J1) vs. Motorola E

Old linux hack, but a noob to android rooting and stuck on Verizon. All functionality aside except for the root, would you recommend the JT or E for ease of rooting?

I simply want to "step" into it with my first root and all, which is easier? Answer this question first, then comments about device differences are welcome.

TIA

K, decided I might try another tactic... Ugh, I've come to despise Verizon/CDMA, but have no choice. I'm having a tough time deciding how to do my first root on Verizon BEFORE I buy the phone. Of course I want a low cost phone, in case I brick it. What would be an easy root for Verizon on any current phone they have on site? Can you provide a link to the root HowTo?

I would just head over to XDA-Developers. That is where I go to root phones. Most Verizon phone are locked.

If you you really want to root the phone, the Nexus 6 is your best bet. Otherwise find a find that has been fully compromised already. I would probably look for an older used phone from Swappa.

Thanks for the reply. Couple of things:

How did you determine the Nexus 6 might be an easier root?

Locking - I'm wondering if another CDMA carrier or MVNO might be easier to root even though using Verizon towers? The runner-up in my area is US Cellular - I don't know if they're easier to root, but look at their locking policy:

Device Unlocking Policy | U.S. Cellular

The Nexus is a developer phone by design. The bootloader can be unlocked with an ADB command "ADB unlock bootloader"

There are two different types of locks on phones. Carrier locking and locked bootloaders. Verizon 4g phones are all carrier unlocked.

Verizon has the manufacturers lock and encrypt the bootloader (except the Nexus).

Some phones can be rooted but the bootloader is never unlocked. Such as my note 4. It had a temp root but had not been fully exploited.

What exactly are you trying to do? Just tinker with the phone? If you just want to play with it I would get a Nexus 4 or 5. They can't be used on Verizon but they can be fully unlocked.

Just tinkering, really want root access with a CDMA carrier and able to go from there, maybe Cynagenmod...

Thanks again!

You want an unlockable bootloader then. Check the phones your are interested in and see if they have been completely compromised. Otherwise a Nexus 6 or a developer edition would be your best bet.
