Must be referring to this recent news: Verizon plans to field test its 5G network in 2016 | Android Central
As to your question; that's assuming grandfathered unlimited data is still an option by the time 5G rolls out. Either way, at this point no one knows. It would be pure speculation to say one way or the other. I'd like to hope that 5G would increase capacity so much they'll bring back unlimited data for all. Naa, who am I kidding?
Think I already know the answer; but is that posted somewhere you can link to or did you make it up?
Verizon ended unlimited for new plans about 3yrs ago, hasn't ended them for grandfathered plans, and allows multiple subsidized upgrade and unofficial tethering loopholes to exist. Yet all you people do is whine endlessly about them. Someday, yes it is possible that they will cease to allow plans that are now more than 3yrs old to continue. Until then, enjoy it. Now quit yer bellyaching and get off my lawn!

As long as you don't want to upgrade to the latest and greatest, sure. Those on the digital choice plan which was around about 10 years ago (before the nationwide plans) cannot upgrade to 3g or 4GLTE smartphones. They can keep their plans of course... With non 3g/4GLTE devices.Verizon continues to allow people to keep plans that are almost 20 years old.
My mother still has the same exact plan that she's had since Verizon was
still called Bell Atlantic. It's a voice/text only plan. 550 voice peak minutes
for $15.96 per month(taxes and fees included). Night/weekend minutes
and unlimited texting are also included. She gets a new flip phone for free
every couple of years.

But the point being, what would happen if you want to upgrade to a smartphone? Likely you would lose that plan. Her plan dates back to 1996 or 1997 and get this, it only covers
the Northeast regions(New England states). Outside of those
states, the included minutes are not counted. Bell Atlantic Mobile
had some wacky plans back then. Still, I don't get how Verizon
can continue to let my mother keep this antique plan. She's fine
with it. This plan is essentially an unlimited VOICE plan. Because
it comes with a one-time 500-minute credit each 6 months. Those
500 minutes only kicks in after she goes over her monthly allowed
550 minutes. Her bill still says employee discount for "Pan American
World Airways"(the airline went out of business in 1991, but had
employee discount for mobile service) That just shows how out
of date Verizon's system is.
The only downside to having such an ancient plan is that 99% of
Verizon employees had never heard of it. Making simple changes
like billing address change requires manual input by a phone rep.
It usually takes 30+ minutes because the rep has to research into
the database and find out how to do it to an ancient plan. (because
when the billing address changed to New York, they had to adjust
the taxes/fees manually, as the system doesn't know how to do
this automatically)
Do you have to pay to use the NFL app?I thought Verizon would make you give up unlimited when VoLTE came out. I would not be shocked if they just don't care about the few unlimited customers left in 2018. It seems to be staying now. I can use the NFL App this year. If I remember correctly in the past you could not use it on unlimited. In addition, if you get the Moto X 2015 Pure Addition there is no subscription check for the mobile hotspot.

That was Shammo speaking off the cuff, not an official press release. And the next day, they clarified the issue.IIRC, they tried that with the switch from 3G to 4G and it didn't work out well for them. A week after saying that, they changed the policy.
