Default New Contract but Save Phone Discount

My girlfriend is on a family plan with her her family and the contact expires March 11. When this contract expires she will be moving to her own phone plan. She was wanting to get the Thunderbolt but the phone has not been released yet. Can she start a new contract and use her current Verizon phone (LG Envy) and then when the Thunderbolt comes out get it at the discounted price ($250 or whatever it is for 2 year contract) rather than paying the full price ($600)?

If it expires, it will just continue to go and you just pay the price you have been paying. Once it expires, it just allows you to cancel anytime you want after that period without a fee.

I understand that. However, her mother will be cancelling the family plan. Therefore she must get a new individual contract that is separate. Therefor that option will not be availible to her. Is there any way she can start a new verizon account, use her current phone and then get the thunderbolt at the discounted rate?

Should be able to since she is not getting a new phone.

Ask Verizon if she can separate the phone to its own account. She should be able to do it without starting a new service.

Yes she can get her own line of service with her existing phone and keep her upgrade date. She will need to do an Assumption of Liability (AOL) and transfer her number to an account under her name, unless she wants a new number, then she can just cancel her line and start a new line of service. An AOL will lock her in a 1-year contract but once she gets her upgrade she will have a new 2-year contract, so it really won't matter.
