Number porting after purchase?

I'm awaiting the arrival of my new Thunderbolt from Amazon :) I will be new to Verizon and it is very important to me to be able to port my old number.

When placing the order, I wasn't able to arrange for porting because my current billing and and shipping addresses are not in the area where my old number is from. This is because I lived abroad until recently, and am still unsettled, but WILL be returning to the area my old number is from. I have pending job applications tied to my old number as well, making keeping my number crucial.

So, do any of you have any advice on the best way to try to get the number ported now? Should I contact Verizon before I activate? Should I call, or go to a store? Or will the people in a store not want to help me with my Amazon-purchased phone?

Any tips, tricks, strategy and advice are very welcome!

Call customer care from a landline and tell them you have a number you want to port over. It is a Verizon phone and should not be a problem. Just make sure the phone on the number being ported is turned off.
