Verizon 'significantly altering' unlimited data?

Info gleaned from an operations meeting:

It will affect roughly 1200 customersTheir median usage is 510GBIt is NOT affecting BE accounts (with ECPD)

So this seems like it won't affect many of the "commercial" renters since they have corporate accounts with ECPD.

https://m.reddit.com/r/verizon/comm...nects/?utm_source=mweb_redirect&compact=false

The issue with median is how huge of a difference it could be. One person using terabytes can easily offset people using just over 100gb.

Let's say that 10% of people use terabytes but are paying tiered data plus overages... Would they stop those people who are heavily taxing shared resources so that everyone else own have a good mobile experience?

Exactly. They would not say anything if the user was paying for it.

This really sucks. I have 3 UDPs on my plan and we pay for the hotspot on two of them. Usage last month on my son's was 148GB and mine was 97GB. We have no internet available and I put my card in a MiFi to allow usage to the computers and dvd for Netflix. I hope we are not one of the ones contacted for sure.

Dpham is that a monthly average for the 510GB?

Ok so I just had a talk with the area manager who oversees corporate stores in my area of NC, lower VA, western TN, and northern GA and yes, the rumors are true...he told me that if unlim data users have consumed more than 100 gigs AVERAGE, that vzw will be asking those customers to move onto another plan...those who don't comply will have their line or lines terminated that use more than 100 gigs on an average basis. He told me that the system will automatically calculate one's average use over the past 12 months and use those #s to determine who's affected and who isn't...so I went online to my Verizon and calculated my average usage and I'm sitting at 757.6 GB average per month lol

If your average is truly 757.6 GB per month that is obscene. They should have kicked you off the network months ago. There is a thing called an ISP that you should have like the rest of us and not abuse the mobile network. Here I am using home and other WiFi whenever I can to conserve data and you are using over 100 times the average. Sorry, but I think this is a good move by VZW. One post said it only affected 1200 customers. Those 1200 probably use as much data as a million others. This move will speed up the network for the rest of us.

You and everyone else will notice no difference. He paid for unlimited data, and used it.

So here is a question. I went back and checked our bills to March and two of our lines were under 30GB each most months. My son's line was 155, 84, 149, 175 GB. Dammit. I have told him for months to keep it under 100. Would Verizon make us change all the lines? Just his? If we have to change all of them I am going to cancel his line and he can just deal with it. I hope that would be possible. Any thoughts?

Hmm good question. I would think they would only go after the line using a ton.

I signed up for unlimited and pay for my services rendered unto me by Verizon. I pay my fee for the hotspot add on, so "they should have kicked me off long ago" is your opinion. My bill is paid on time or before time each month. Nobody has to like it, but I'll continue to use my Verizon unlimited data and I'm sure @ the end of the month, Verizon will expect payment....

I call BS on that. If this person is using my tower, or a couple like him using 100s of times more data than everyone else, you don't think that is going to bog down that tower???? I can't even fathom how you could use that data (3/4 of a TB) in a month.

In his defense -- Verzion does offer the $30 unlimited hotspot addon. Blame Verzion for allowing it if anything because he was just using what was offered. That would be like me saying don't use more than 50 GB on your home wifi even though your ISP offers you the wifi with no limit.

Other carriers don't allow unlimited hotspot. I have unlimited data on my phone with T-Mobile but only 7 GB tether -- this is why.

You can AOL another udp line and activate it once the line is 100, then suspend the old one. I have multiple unlimited data lines, so I can switch between them.

With that said, I don't work for Verizon, just relaying what I saw on other sites.

I use a Verizon 4GLTE broadband router with voice. Verizon explicitly advertises this device as being usable for home Internet. I also have the Verizon ac791l mifi with ethernet dock, although that wasn't explicitly advertised to replace home Internet, it is advertised to share data amongst multiple devices

You would have to ask Verizon... Only they know.

With that said, you can AOL another udp line, and switch between them to keep data under 100 a month

This is an interesting thought. But how does that work? Just swap the sim in the Mifi at 100GB? What does that do to the monthly billing? I already took away one line to use in the Mifi and got my husband a dumb phone. So really I would not have to get another new line because I could stop using the mifi and use my phone as a hotspot once I reach 100gb. I would have to add the $30 fee though to my phone for the rest of the month. But for all our devices - except son's - we only used 97-105 gb last month. When I was paying for hotspot on all 3 UDPs mine and husband's was under the 30GB per month, now with it all on the Mifi it is higher.

Use it for half a month, suspend the line, reactivate the other line. Rinse and repeat every half month.

If it were multiple people on one tower sucking up that much bandwidth at the same time, you may have a valid point. With a group this small, only a small number of towers would be affected, and I doubt any of those would have more than one extreme user at a time. I'm willing to bet their network is robust enough that a tower can handle that kind of data use from one person without others noticing an impact.

Besides, what are you doing on a phone that would require massive speeds anyway? You can only do so much, and anything higher is just bragging rights. It's not like it'll make Facebook load any faster. Videos would, of course, but so what if the current bandwidth is letting you watch without pausing to buffer.

Just chatted online with a Verizon rep. Of course only after I removed the sim card from the Mifi and put it in a phone. :)

Here is the chat email:

Chat Transcript
PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE - All replies are automatically deleted.
Jesse : Thank you for contacting the Verizon Wireless Chat Team regarding your bill. How can we help you today?
You : Hello. I am reading information on the internet about some unlimited data customers losing their line due to high usage. Is this true and how do I find out if my name is on the list?
Jesse : Oh,dear! It's alarming to receive this information. I can check option for you to confirm this information for you.
Jesse : May i have your complete name please?
You : ***********
You : hello?
Jesse : Thanks ****!
Jesse : sorry for the long waiting. I am pulling up the update here on my end.
You : Please do not change anything on my plan.
Jesse : certainly! No other changes will be done on your account without your authorization.
Jesse : Thank you for patiently waiting.
You : should I call and talk to someone instead?
Jesse : Yes, we do have the new update for the Migration of grandfathered unlimited plans to New verizon plan.
Jesse : No worries, I am here to provide you the information.
You : As far as I have read it is only 1200 people and I want to know if I am one of those being affected on 8/31?
Jesse : Checking now how this migration impacts your account based on your usage.
You : I have 3 unlimited lines.
Jesse : Yes, that is right!
You : Just as an FYI I do not want to be migrated anywhere.
Jesse : Upon checking your last three months of data usage, your average data usage is up to 34.21GB.
You : Is that for each line? So no lines of mine are affected?
Jesse : This is for the one line only.
Jesse : The line 6942 uses an average of 123.630 GB for the last 3 months.
You : So is that line affected?
Jesse : Yes.
You : What does that mean?
Jesse : High usage of data will be mandatory to be migrated to our newly launched New Verizon plan.
You : Over 100 GB then is high usage on an unlimited data plan is what you are saying?
Jesse : This New Verizon plan is shared. It means, the data allowance is sharable with the lines on the account.
Jesse : Yes, that is right. 100GB data usage is included in a high usage.
You : Do I keep my other two unlimited data lines?
Jesse : Good question.
You : I pay for hotspot on these lines.
You : If I cannot keep my lines I will have to leave Verizon as there is no reason to stay.
Jesse : My apology if you are not comfortable with the ongoing migration of services.
Jesse : To confirm, you received the information about this migration first hand?
You : No this is why I am asking you.
You : Will I get a letter is what I want to know.
You : And will it apply to all lines or just the one that is over 100gb.
Jesse : Thanks for the confirmation. Upon thorough checking, your account is not required to change plan.
Jesse : Just verify the list and you can still continue to have your unlimited data plan.
You : For all 3 lines?
Jesse : Yes.
You : Thank you. Now I know what the cap on an unlimited data plan is - at least for now.
Jesse : The pleasure is all mine. Is there anything else I can help you with today?
You : You have been helpful. As you can see by our data usage this would be an incredible blow to us. We are rural and have no other source of internet. Which is why we have kept this plan for so long. I don't think we are exorbitant users but we also pay the hotspot fee for years. I have paid over $9000 for phone service since 2011.
Jesse : Yes, I do agree with you and we really appreciate being a loyal customer.
Jesse : It's my pleasure to help and provide you details about this Migration and to provide you a peace of mind.
Jesse : Would there be anything else I can assist you with?
You : No thank you.
You : Have a good day.
Jesse : Fantastic! I had a great time chatting with you! Thank you for being a loyal Verizon Wireless customer. Again, my name is Jesse, your Account Specialist.
