Is there any way to disable the keyboard back button without doing a hardware modification?

If you were to get the device rooted you could probably remap the physical keyboard setting.

Using Notepad++ it looks like it might be in either:
\system\usr\keylayout\gelato_keypad.kl
\system\usr\keylayout\qwerty.kl

Entry:
key 158 BACK WAKE_DROPPED

Not sure if that's the front facing one. I don't want to try changing it until it's been verified or I have a custom recovery installed to repair the phone.

KeynrTracker.apk shows both the front facing and QWERTY back key as being key number 158. May not be possible to change only one with a simple edit.
