My question is can I keep the pre installed 2.2 rom and replace the kernal so I can over clock the cpu and at the same time will I still be able to send mms? Is this possible?

So in short I want to keep the same rom that phone came with and keep all the features. But change the kernal so the phone can be over clocked.

This should be possible.
I'd recommend going with the stock + xionia (sp?) rom since that will give you a nice clean start and allow you to overclock while staying relatively stock. I'm currently running my phone this way and it's great.
