Best 5-6" android for google cardboard/expeditions application?

I am technology volunteer for a small charter school in the mountains of central Pennsylvania. We want to use Google Cardboard/Expeditions to expand the kids horizons. Not many "smartphones" in the area, so i am searching for a low cost piece of hardware that will work in the headsets. I ordered a $99 Chinese phone (Lenovo S898t) which seemed to meet all the required specs - but I am getting a NO GYRO or GYRO NOT FOUND error. Any advice on making that phone work or purchasing one that will is appreciated.

Gyroscope, helps VR follow your movement and orientation. Moto G is $180, that's the cheapest new device I'm aware of that fully supports everything but maybe someone else has a better idea?
