Whatsapp goes into dormant mode if I do not pick up my phone for sometime.
The messages start to come up based on 2 triggers:
1. Open whatsapp
2. Open a specific chat to trigger the refresh.

I am using S6 Edge, anyone else facing this issue ?

Yes, I've noticed similar in that I will go to send a message and when I hit the arrow to send it will occasionally just show the little small square timer box, in conjunction with this issue even though I have settings for last seen for all my contacts all that I will see is the persons name, to get round this I require to release whatsapp from RAM, or even switch off wifi, any two of those solutions seems to free the app from this sleep state.

This can be quite annoying as it can stop the message from sending also messages that others have already sent won't automatically arrive until I have performed one of those solutions, so I would agree there must be some kind of bug, fingers crossed, it hasn't done this since I removed it completely and did a fresh install.
