How do I fix my whatsapp widget problem?

Ever since I updated my 6P to Android 7.1.1 my whatsapp widget is messed up, sometimes it'll stay blank and won't update with new messages, other times when I have checked a message it will stay in the widget, I thought maybe an update would fix that but it's been over a month and still the same problem, any fix for this without a hard reset?

Hard reset is a desperate measure only to be used as a last resort. If clearing the app cache and force stopping the app doesn't fix it, uninstall whatsapp and reinstall it again. If you want to keep your chats, whatsapp backs them up to cloud...
Also, after software updates, it's good to wipe cache partition on your device... Try that before uninstalling the app...

Welcome to Android Central! Moved to the WhatsApp forum. Have you already tried going to Settings>Apps, selecting WhatsApp, then Storage, and then Clear Cache? You can also Clear Data, but I'm not sure if this will erase any important messages you might have saved on the phone.
