Unable to turn Sync back on

I have an Acer Iconia Tablet A1-840 running Android 4.4.4 and I made the mistake of agreeing to some battery saving measures which turned the syncing of my email off and now I can't turn it back on. I can sync manually from the settings area, but I can't turn the automatic syncing back on. There is also no where in the settings where I can do this. Does anyone have any suggestions?
