My 93-year-old mom lives 300 miles away, is mostly blind and deaf and now, completely bed ridden…but her minds still sharp. However, any tech I get for her needs to be as reliable as possible (she lives with my sister who can’t help w/tech…if it stops working it’s gone). I’ve been testing Dot w/headphones to read audio books and answer questions and this will be a Godsend. The one thing I’d like to add right away is giving her the ability to turn off/on her lamp (and if it doesn’t impact reliability, dimmer capability and maybe ‘colors’ which she’d like).

For weeks I’ve been pouring over reviews for the different options and brands…bulbs/plugs/switches, w/wo hub requirements…but I’m only more confused. I could really use some guidance and/or suggestions from someone who has actually tried various solutions. Again, the main thing is reliability…if it stops working for any reason it’s gone until I can get out there.

Thanks so much for any help!

I installed a Phillips hub on the network and bought a couple of bulbs. (Kit with 2 bulbs = https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014H2OZAC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I have them both in the living room and "grouped" so I can either turn them both on at the same time or separately. Works like a charm. You can tell Alexa to dim them if you like. There is a more expensive kit with bulbs that can change color if you prefer.
