Anyone try installing APK files not from Amazon ( example) mailing yourself an apk attachement in GMail?

It works. You have to go into the settings/security and turn "on" install from unknown sources. I'd recommend installing the GetJar apk for easy installs (like the Nook app).

It works fine but pain in the ***. You have to use your android phone to get apks or hunt on the web. Another annoying thing i noticed is that apps in amazon app store are lagging behind in version numbers compared to android market

Personally I'm hoping to get Slingplayer up and running as soon as I pick it up.

Can the official google apps be sideloaded like any other apk?

What I've found easiest is putting them on my dropbox (including the dropbox apk) then using the web interface to get the dropbox apk and then it's real easy to get the rest.

As far as gapps...the mail and docs seem to be tied to the google account we don't have so NO, but the maps app partially works

Slingplayer is working well, I had the .apk from my phone. Used the dropbox tip mentioned above and it made installing things really easy.

I went to the Dropbox site with the browser to get the apk and then found and saved apks to my Dropbox on my PC. Then I installed them from the Dropbox on the Fire.

I downloaded the GetJar app and tried to download the Nook app for my Kindle Fire. It worked as far as getting to the app but once I tried to actually download the Nook App it came back saying No compatible version for the Kindle Fire was available. So .. at a loss as to what to do next. Any suggestions?

On you web browser on your fire go to the m.getjar.com site and find the app you want, and tap download. A message will popup if you want to use the getjar app. click yes and it will download. Don't use the getjar app to search and download, it always defaults to the amazon app store.

The amazon apps lag behind because I've heard many devs say amazon treats them like crap...
