Gingerbread and Facebook

I understand there is an issue with Facebook contacts syncing with Android contacts on Gingerbread-based phones because Facebook and Google are in a bit of a fight. So here's my question: Has anyone figured out a way to get the facebook contacts to sync on a gingerbread phone?

If not, I have a 3-week break from school coming up in a few weeks, and would love to have something to do, so maybe I could work on a fix. I'm new to Android computing, but I have some experience in other areas of computers. Can anyone think of any advice that might push me in the right direction? In other words, if you've ever thought about how a fix for this could be effected, what are your thoughts?

It's only for the nexus s. Google left all the other phones alone.

all of my contacts synced automatically except for a few. this may be because i was logged in via my motoblur account. to manually sync (on my Atrix at least) you goto edit contact, menu, join....find the FB contact and save. you may need to show all contacts under the display options first.
