This is my first time using Android, so it might seem like a dumb question.
With my iPhone, if I get an email, I will get a notification and I will have a number right beside the app icon telling me how many unread e-mails I have.
I don't seem to be working on my Android. Is there something I can do to turn on this feature?

I have a Nexus 4. Right now, I'm just using the Gmail app that came with the phone.

Icons with numeric badges is not an Android convention. That's an iPhone thing.

You should get a notification icon in the status bar at the top of your screen. You should also see the notification in the notification slider when you pull down the notification shade.

You'll need to turn on the notification light via the system settings, since it isn't turned on by default.
