GPS satellites auto-off?

So I rarely have my GPS satellites setting switched on since it's such a battery drain. I only really use it when I'm using navigation. A couple times I've forgotten to turn it of after exciting the navigator, and then my phone quickly died.
I don't know if this is possible, but is there any way to have my GPS setting turn itself off when I exit navigation?
Thanks

Jelly bean removed the option for apps to automatically turn on/off the GPS. You'll have to root the device, and use an like "Tasker", to be able to do it automatically.

What you can do without rooting, is to use "Tasker" to give you a notification(popup, ringtone,or voice) whenever you exit your navigation app, to turn off your GPS. I use it to give me voice notifications when my car dock is enable or disabled.

But the GPS doesn't really take up much battery. You can your check the battery stats. My GPS is on all the time and if I'm not using google nav, it's less than 1%.
