My tablet camera goes to sleep at the most important moment

HI!

I own a Sony Xperia tablet z and wanting to use the video and/or pics I royally messed up my son's pictures and videos at his Marathon finishing line. When I saw him arriving, I went back to my tablet but the screen had gone to sleep. By the time I revived the camera, he had already crossed the finishing line.

Why is this happening, how can I correct the situation so that I do not mess it up again?

Android devices all turn their screens off automatically after a certain amount of time has passed without user input to prevent wasting battery. You can alter this timeout period in your device settings; I'm not familiar with Sony devices, but by default the setting is located under the Display category.
