Unless I'm a complete moron, it looks like you need to open Google Now to see that you have a reminder?
So you need to be actively looking at your phone to realize you have a reminder, which defeats to purpose of having set a reminder.

You can set an alarm for a specific time, but you can't add text/notes to it.

I see you can add pop-up alerts in Keep, but that's a multi-step process versus just saying "Remind me at......"
    Am I missing something obvious?

I have wondered the same thing. From what I have seen, they do show up as a notification in the notification bar, but I have never heard an alarm for them. If I was relying on this to get me to do something at a particular time, it would never work for me.

I have notifications turned on in Google Now settings yet I never get a notification. For example, opened up Now and saw I had a package alert from Google (Chromecast). Why no notification about it other than my gmail new mail notification?
