Correct. A major UI change would mess lots of things up, but minor improvements would be fine. I would really love to see a UI based on the white card layout of Google Now. I

I sure hope not. Lots of legitimate complaints from iOS7 users. Too bright to look at at night

Yeah, white/brighter colors would go well, especially with a damn nice IPS display. I hope whatever OS that does come after kitkat, it blows us all away with features and design elements we wouldn't have even thought of

The simplest way I can explain it is the pixels block the back light. The pixels and back light are both still on, but the pixels are keeping light from traveling through.
That's only true where LEDs are used for back-lighting (as on standard LCD displays, like MacBook Pros and some TVs) or edge-lighting (as in most modern "LED" LCD TVs and monitors). AMOLED displays filter nothing, as the AMOLED grid is what's actually creating the display and producing the light; in that case, blacks simply turn off the pixel(s) in question.

So, on Galaxy phones (S through S4), a black screen will save battery. On our Nexus 4 it won't, as it's using LED backlight with an LCD (IPS) matrix in front.

Honestly I wanted a darker ui and an AMOLED display. battery life on my gnex was awesome because I use a blacks on blacks most of the time. But Google seems to be going towards a brighter ui. And that's not a problem as long as they can increase performance. Cause I'll get those blacks same way or another. Bottom line I want more performance.
