Exactly what does "autostart" mean?

I use rooted SD Maid to manage my apps and there are several apps that are listed as "autostart". After booting most of these apps do not show up as currently running. My aim is to stop the "autostart" of the apps that I don't want to actually "autostart". If "autostart" for those apps that aren't actually running after a boot means that it is simply an initialization process in preparation for running later then I would probably leave "autostart" enabled. If, however, resources are continually being used by these apps then I would disable the "autostart". Can anyone please clarify?
