A reset being completely reset the device so you have to set it up all over again. Back up any files you don't want to lose, and then in Settings, there should be a backup and reset option. Click on that.

This is probably a basic question. When you do a factory reset, will it erase the user data stored on the /sdcard partition as well?

In my experience, it has gone both ways. I have had data wiped, and not. I always go under the assumption that data will be lost when a reset is done.

Edit: and external card should be fine, but when I had devices that took them, I always unmounted them just in case.

That makes me wonder if the user data on the "internal" storage mounted as /sdcard/ will be wiped as well. Even though it is truly an internal partition, its name suggests that Android may treat it like an external one. Any thoughts on this?

I would have thought the personal data should be safe. But then again, I think the last time that happened was on my S2 which was partitioned in such a strange way.
