Stupid question, undo

Hi, this is the first time I've had an android phone, my new nexus 6. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to undo. I have googled it and I've seen in places, mainly older websites / posts, that say there is no on do in android. But that doesn't make sense. How do I undo? On my former iphones it was simply shaking the phone. I can't find it in any of the menus. Sorry if this is a totally newbie question. Thanks.

Sometimes depending on the context a little bar will appear offering you to "undo". For example if you delete an email in gmail, it will appear. Or if you close a tab in chrome it also appears.

Undo your last action within that app.
