I am new to cell phones. I have a Nexus 5 and am running Android 5.1.1. I want to get an audible alarm for notices but I do not want the popup notification. Is there a way to cancel specific notifications or is it all or nothing?

On Lollipop, there's currently no way that I'm aware of to get rid of the banner-type notification and still get a notification tone.

Out of curiosity, why do you say you're new to cell phones? I see from your posts that you've had a Nexus 5 since last year ...

I'm 74 years old. I suppose it's all relative. I've been using my computer since 1983. I'm not new with that. Perhaps the other point is that there is no manual to read for Android. I'm a compulsive manual reader. There is almost no Android. There is Google Android and Samsung Android and LG Android and so forth. Today I was visiting a customer service center for TelCel to look at some Motorola cell phones. They're supposed to be closer to straight Android than most but they were still different from my Nexus 5.

Thanks for the information. That's what I suspected but I was hoping I was wrong.

With 5.0 you could dismiss that notification swiping the pop up left or right. But that action deletes it from your status bar as well. After 5.1 you can dismiss the pop up swiping it up but it will keep the notification in your status bar and shade.

Not what you were asking but just in case you didn't know

Thank you. Very thoughtful and I'm reading it now. Some of the basics I've picked up by trial and error but I've already learned a few things.
