Google Play issues after Lollipop upgrade?

After upgrading to Lollipop (5.1, Droid Turbo), Google Play insists that it won't work unless updated. But it must work, or it couldn't update itself. And reviews of the current version claim problems with battery life, data usage, even more ads popping up. So if updating isn't really necessary, can I just disable its notifications? And if it is, can those problems be avoided?

Are we the only ones with this problem? Anyway, force-stopping Google Play and then restarting it seems to have worked. No notifications for several days.
