Compression artifacts for MMS

Is there a way to improve picture compression when sending MMS texts? I know there's a carrier limit of 1mb but that's a lot of space to deal with - the same pic uncompressed - un-resized - via WhatsApp is stellar.

I was hoping Android would allow one to specify compression parameters or format etc... I thought it was app dependent and tried an alternative MMS app, still no luck. The alternative app allowed specification of max size but the compression is outright atrocious.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to Android Central! I know this doesn't answer your question directly, but how about uploading the photo (in either High Quality or Original Quality) to your Google Photos in the web, then sharing the link privately with the recipient?
