If you click on the so called virus scanner it goes to google play and offers a Firebird browser download. I cannot download an anti vi programme cos it says I have used all my tabs and I need to get rid of a few.

Welcome to Android Central! Do NOT agree to install anything from that popup. It is almost certainly malicious. This is a common tactic--scare the user with a browser popup warning you that you have "viruses" on your phone (which you don't have), then telling you to download and install a "security app" immediately. This app is most likely adware or malware.

Browser popups like that are usually associated with the sites you visit, so avoid those sites, or just ignore the popups.
