I have multiple e-mail accounts (who doesn't?) & I have the gmail app taking care of them all.

When the gmail app is open it has 3 round circles on the top (3 e-mail accounts) & each has a small 'chat bubble' overlay which indicates the number of unread messages.

The first indicates the current e-mail which is active & the other two can be pressed to open that e-mail.

I don't know where gmail came up with the icons, but I can't find where to change them as a green circle with a silhouette does little to help me associate it to a certain account.

In the picture (not mine) I am talking about left hand screen shot with her picture & the Purple & Yellow icons with the A inside each.

Those icons are pulled from the Google account (where applicable). For non-Google accounts it uses a colored circle with the initial in it (M in my case as my real name starts with M). The other way I've found to select which mail account to view is to tap the arrow to the right of the full account name (below the picture for the selected account) and it will bring up the account list to select from.
