if the card is formatted as "adoptable storage" you cannot access to it anymore, if you left it as "external storage" then go to settings - apps - show all apps - look for "media" and "external media" and clear cache and data for both apps, reboot device and let it re-build database for 5 minutes or so, all this with USB cable disconnected, try again after this process and it should work (pull down menu -> select "MTP" option), but be warned that the problem is likely to come back next time you want to connect device with computer or in 2-3 days, it's random. Marshmallow is clearly flawed in this regard (SD card access) compared to 5.1.1 which straight away lets you see and interact with SD content immediately after connecting USB cable to computer.

Can someone please tell me how to uninstall Marshmallow? The update wants to reformat my SD card, and I have stuff on there that I don't want to lose.

Welcome to Android Central! Uninstall from which phone? You typically can't uninstall a system update unless you root the phone and flash the previous stock ROM.

Is the phone telling you it wants to reformat the SD card during the setup process? Or is it just asking you if you want to use the SD card as adoptable storage?

turn the phone off, remove back cover and SD card, put SD card in SD reader / dongle in your computer, perform a backup / copy the content you want to keep, then put the card back and let Marshmallow format it as "external storage", once formatted copy the data from your computer to SD card again.

also, in case you really want to revert back to 5.1.1...

(don't forget to perform a factory reset before "downgrading" to 5.1.1)

One thing to keep in mind. If you format to portable, staying with marshmallow, you no longer have the ability to move apps to the sd card if you have been doing that. The only way is with adoptable and it's half baked. If yo do not plan on moving apps then ignore this. It's kind of a catch 22 though. You have to deal with adoptable storage if you want to move apps to the sd, or you cannot move them at all in portable.

great appreciation, Google is going backwards, Marshmallow might run great on the Nexus's but it is a huge step backwards for mid-range devices relying on SD cards to store offline data and other important features such as USB access via computer to interact with device content. Marshmallow has 0 performance advantages compared to 5.1.1 in most devices that are not called "Nexus".

I agree, backwards move. I think if and when more start updating and/or getting phones with marshmallow we will hear more complaints. 1% is still a long way to go.

I have this same problem. When I did the upgrade to my Samsung Galaxy S5 there was never an option presented to format my SD card. It is no longer view-able in "app manager" and all of the apps I loaded on the card are now on the phone memory and it says I am at 11GB of the total 16GB memory. I paid for the SD card and want to use it. So now what can I do?

It is utterly unfathomable. A simple warning of this glitch in the upgrade before installing would have allowed me to back up the sd card from my phone to the cloud, format it and click a button to get it back. Now ive got to take it out, find a computer with the right slot. Work out how to copy it. Copy it. Format it on my phone? Put it back in the phone formatted? Take it out again put my data back on from the computer? Put it back in the phone and hope it works........????
Sorry but whoever is in charge of this upgrade needs denoting.

Is it a deliberate 'spoiler' to get people to stop buying Samsung? No can't be, that would be illegal wouldn't it.

And I've got to buy an adapter to put the micro ad card in. This should all take about 3 to 4 hours. If they had warned beforehand it would have taken 2 minutes. I think Apple might deserve a go.

Now I discover the Samsung s7 edge doesn't allow the ad card to be used as portable storage. For a device that costs £500 a year, you would think the device manufacturer and the software provider would make sure it works. Definitely Apple next time.
