I have reviewed all the arguments re adopted and portable storage. I have decided I should go for the portable option. I understand that after that update I will not be able to move be apps to the SF card. Two questions
1 will the apps which are on.the card update.
    2. Is it possible to download apps to the card using another phone not on marshmallow and then pop it back in the Moto x

    1. Yes the Apps will update and move back to Internal storage and every time they update if they are on SD card in portable storage mode

    2. Currently, no your phone would not recognize the Apps. And also Google set it so App developers could have this feature disabled or only app data can be moved but not the app itself

If you are looking for more storage try Adoptable storage
