I hate it when I'm on a site or any app typing something then I get a dropdown notification like a whatsapp message covering the upper portion of the screen and on Android you can't just swipe that notification up like you can on iOS

Is there a way to stop these drop down notifications? I only want to see them on the app icons in the home screen.

Try HeadsOff. Nougat has the ability to do what you're asking, but I don't think it was introduced in Marshmallow yet as a native function.

On my Samsung Galaxy S5 running 6.0.1 I can swipe to the side (not up) to instantly hide the notification. But I'm not sure if that's a Android feature or a Samsung feature.

Also you can go into the Application Manager > Choose an App > Allow Notifications
