So I have been reading plenty of reviews from the play store of both Google messaging apps, and from what I can tell, google messenger is as simple and plain as you can get. The 2 issues that I've seen with Google messenger are this: when sending pictures as MMS, the app compresses the picture too much, so that on the recipients end, the picture actually looks pixelated. The other issue is that for the quick reply notifications. Now, on my phone, I stop using the quick reply notifications in Google Messenger because number one if you receive a message from more than one person at a time and you were in the middle of running back to someone, that message isn't there anymore or that message was into someone else's thread that you didn't want it to be in. That review was actually one of the criticisms in the play store. Number 2 when you go to send the message and the notification doesn't auto cleared from the notification shade which is really annoying. So far that doesn't happen with Hangouts. For both of those issues. What is everyone's thoughts and opinions on this? I'm trying to give Hangouts another go for myself thanks for any help and input I appreciate it!

Is Hangouts social media software or is it simply a messenging program? All I do is send messages to single recipients with, quite rarely, a photo and Messenger works for me.

    It's a messaging app.

I agree with you. I am now circuit myself to use hangouts. It is more organized, and efficient in combining text messages and im in one app, I also love how when you respond to a quick reply notification, it Auto clears itself out. It's a subtle, but nice feature! Something that google messenger hasn't had since developer preview 3 unfortunately. I also downloaded a gif animations keyboards since hangouts doesn't work with the g keyboard, and gif animation for some reason.

Hangouts supports SMS/MMS, but it also supports its own messaging system... sort of similar to iMessage in the sense that Hangouts native traffic goes over the data line to Google's servers. And unlike SMS clients, Hangouts messages are multi-presence... You can access the same conversations via the web or Chrome apps.

From what I've read, Google is going to mold Hangouts into a Slack-like collaborative platform, rather than a messaging system.

Thats a good integration. I mean with hangouts the only thing that I can't do is see my actual text message on my PC but it's not too too big of a deal. Now, i wonder how Allo fits into all of this now.

Actually, you can see your text messages on Hangouts on your PC if you're using a Google Voice number.

Hangouts used to merge all conversations for one contact across the native Hangouts data messages, SMS messages via the number on your phone, and SMS messages received via Google Voice. Google disabled that functionally sometime ago. Since then I've been using Hangouts exclusively for Google Voice and Messenger for text messages that I receive via the phone number connected to my 6P. That's worked pretty well, but I do miss the integration.

Oh, I also noticed at some point last year that Hangouts was removed as an option for sharing content from an app to an SMS recipient. I think that's when I finally made the switch to Messenger for most of text messages. I now use Google Voice/Hangouts only for work purposes.

That's true however I don't have a Google voice number anymore. Oh well.
