Some phones will be optimized to operate with so little RAM, but most won't. In any case, Nougat's minimal overhead seems to be about that: 1 GB.

Draw your own conclusions.

Newer phones that have Nougat are optimised to support at least 2GB of RAM, this is evident with all android phones. Samsung are putting 4-6GB of RAM in their smartphones to avoid lag at all times. The Samsung J series is the cheapest smartphone that they create and they have 2GB of RAM

I agree: in stock form, without any additional apps or services running, Android itself will use up to 1 GB of RAM at any given moment.

Most phones nowadays come with at least 2 GB, with the 4-to-6 GB range becoming the norm for mid-to-top-of-the-range phones. Needless to say, with only 1 GB of RAM, you can forget about gaming on your phone, but to just place and receive calls, SMS, it should suffice.
