I really hope someone can help I want to change the Default Write Disk to my external SD card like I did on 6.0 so photos and various other things are automatically saved to the SD card but on Oreo Settings/Storage this option is not there.

So I'm moving them manually

Please help!

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? On most phones, you have to look at the settings of individual apps for an option to save things to the SD card by default. Start with the Camera app -- bring up its settings and look for the option to change default storage from Phone to SD card.

Thanks for the replys.

A Generic Argos rebranded phone the last one was a rebranded LG not sure what this one is.

For as long as I can remember the Generic Android phones, Boxes and Tablets always it was Setting/Storage/Default Write disk

A little google and other people are suggesting the same as you but also going to Settings/Apps/Name of app/Storage there is no option to change anything.

I can access the SD card just fine with File explorers etc so I know it's working

If anyone knows a third party app to do this please let me know.

I mean opening the individual apps and going to the app's settings, not the system settings. Some apps aren't coded any more to save data to the SD card (probably because SD cards are known to be much less reliable than onboard memory, and they can also impact performance since read/write will almost always be slower).

Thanks for your help

Here is a shot of Camera options

A very bad photo of Storage options on the old phone

And a shot of storage options on new phone

I've actually just done a factory reset and it made no difference.

Do you see any appropriate option if you tap the camera icon in that settings menu? Otherwise, you may have to try a 3rd party camera app.

Sadly no

This is a big blow

Thanks for your help

I'd really like to know when this option disappeared, around Android 7?

I probably will try setting up a SD card for that SD link thing but this is a bugger

It's not really related to the Android version, but rather the manufacturer. It's up to the manufacturer to implement these kinds of features, and some decide not to.

Since you have a phone with Oreo, there's a possibility the card can be formatted as Internal Storage (which is called Adoptable Storage). This makes the phone regard the card as part of its own internal storage, which can therefore increase not only the storage capacity but also the space to install apps. However, we generally recommend against this, since SD cards are generally less reliable, and if/when they crash or become corrupt, that can cause some significant system instability.

You can tell if your phone supports Adoptable Storage by seeing if it asks you if you want to format a card as Internal Storage or Portable Storage.

It's portable the SD card which is good as you don't want it internal, permission has changed for SD card from 6.0 on up and stricter so that could be the issue , whatever you want moved to SD card just use the file manager .

Hi, sorry didn't see your reply, I want to use it to store and transfer files to the PC but want it to take some of the burden of the internal storage by storing photos etc
