I have read Android Oreo supposed to have new features like Unread badges . I have Android Oreo installed and have not seen this happen yet . Can somebody direct me how to set this . I'm talking about the little circle that is over your icon with a number telling you how unread texts or calls have been missed

I think the Launcher the phone has (including factory launcher/theme) has to support it for it work.

What phone do you have, and what launcher are you using?

If you're using a Pixel or another phone running stock Android, you won't see unread notification badges. You'll need to use something like Nova Launcher Prime and Tesla Unread. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher.prime
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.notifier

Other launchers may provide similar features, but this is what I'm familiar with.
The stock launcher on the Pixel will show notification dots if you are on Oreo. Or it's supposed to as per the Oreo changelog.

I have a Nexus 6p running Android Oreo 8.0
Which has a Google launcher not Pixel launcher.
I am familiar with Nova prime launcher using unread badges because I use it in the past .

I have the same issue. Many of the features explained in this article -- https://www.androidauthority.com/android-8-0-review-758783/ -- are not available on my Nexus 6P, including badges, or "dots", even though the Settings -> Notifications show "dots" toggle per app.
