I have a Samsung S7 active on Att. Recently it just received the Android 8.0 update. Since the update if I take a video with the default camera it will save the video and I can see the video in the gallery but if I hit play it says "file not found" but autoplays the same file without issue. When this happen the photos app crashes as well. I am using all stock apps for camera and gallery and I have tried clearing the cache and restating my phone. Anyone have any idea to try and fix this?

Welcome to Android Central! Is the camera saving to Internal Storage or an SD card?

Which cache did you clear -- the app cache for the Gallery app, or the system cache partition?

They save to the SD card but I tired saving to the phone and the same error occurs. I cleared the Samsung Gallery, camera, Google Photos caches. I uninstalled updates to Google Photos and Samsung Gallery. I have tried turn off and on the phone as well and the error persists.

So that we can completely eliminate the SD card as the cause, see what happens if you unmount the card (in Settings>Storage) and remove it, then reboot and try recording the video again.

Would this be an issue with any pictures taken too? I don't have a problem with pictures. Just photos and the app for the Samsung Gallery and Google Photos both keep crashing afterwards. Not sure if they need an update for me to get them to work properly with my phone of if it would be a SD card issue.

I'm sorry, can you clarify -- are you saying that you have problems only with videos, and not photos?
    06-24-2018 09:12 PM
  7. xsodaxmachinex's Avatar
Yes that would be correct. Taking a photo and then goin back and looking at is fine. Even the play in motion option on the photo works too. Just videos will say file not found if I hit the play button to watch it but I can watch the video if I let it autoplay. Photos and videos both crash the Google Photos app after I view a video or photo. The Google Photos app crashes right when I try to launch just using the app.

I forgot to suggest this -- try wiping the system cache partition: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-30240

Will this effect anything I have stored in my phone? It's not a factory restore or anything like that?

I have the same issue as above. Video files will not open in either gallery or file manager on my Galaxy S7 android 8.0. Gallery will show a video preview which can be viewed with sound but selecting the video will give the msg "file not found". Opening a video file from file manager will cause file manager to crash (no video will open). If you attempt to open a photo from file manager it will give a msg along the lines of "gallery has crashed". If you try to open a photo from gallery it opens just fine.

All this has been done after clearing the system cache partition, affects both updated and downgraded versions of gallery and leads me to believe it may be a programming issue withing android 8.0.

*Side note- after adding an mp3 file to my typical music folder, the default music app did not recognize that the file existed. I attempted a restart but it still did not recognize that there was a new file. I gave up and let it sit overnight and now the file is in my library. It is odd because music usually shows up immediately after it is added.

This is only a temporary fix but I am currently using the VLC player for android to play any video files. Its a pretty small download but idk how it will affect battery life. It plays all of my video files without issue.

No, it doesn't affect any of your personal data. It's only temporary system data. But judging from the other responses, it probably won't help. Still, doesn't hurt to try ...

It seems like the Oreo update for the S7 has been fairly glitchy overall. Andrew Martonik wrote about it here: https://www.androidcentral.com/samsu...two-years-oreo

I read through it and some of the comments about doing a factory reset after any major update. I really don't feel like doing that to be honest. I know my photos and such are backed up but I still don't want to have to re-download any of these things again to be honest. Not sure if the factory reset would work in this case though.

Yeah, factory reset is certainly a last resort, which is why I usually suggest trying a cache partition wipe first, as well as Safe Mode (in case the system update introduced some kind of incompatibility with a 3rd party app you installed).

I tried clearing the system cache and that did not help. I really don't want to do a reset. What would safe mode do or would I always need to start it in safe mode? I am also annoyed thar the Google Photos app keep crashing. I think it would help me get around the Samsung Gallery problem not playing videos.

I think I read somewhere ever after the downgrade it still might be messed up but I could be wrong in would be all for a downgrade then.

Safe Mode temporarily disables all 3rd party apps you installed. It helps to narrow down an issue to something you installed vs the system or hardware. If the problem goes away in Safe Mode, then the problem is being caused by something you installed, but then you'd have to uninstall apps one by one until the problem goes away.

The Oreo update for the S7 seems to be pretty glitchy, based on numerous posts here and other articles I've read. If that's the case, then all you can hope for is that Samsung pushes some patches.

    To following fixed mine:

Settings (widget symbol in upper right)

    Apps (Default apps, App permissions)

Tap on the three-dot symbol on upper right of APPS menu

    Select Show system apps

    Select Media Storage

    Long press on Storage

Press both Clear Data and Clear Cache

Clear Data will give you a big warning that application data will be permanently deleted. This is not deleting your photos and videos. It is only deleting how the apps find them. Once this is deleted the apps will start finding them again which is what resolves the problem.

Wait for apps to find all the photos and videos. You can use your phone during this time but it may take awhile until you see all your photos and Media.
