Running Android 8.0.0 which is where I suspect the problem is. At some point, I must have enabled some visibility option that puts borders around most buttons. I neither need nor want this but don't know how to toggle it off.

First place to look is in the Accessibility section of your Settings. In the Visibility Enhancements area you'll see a 'show button shapes' option.

If that one doesn't do it, then UI Element borders are activated in the Developer Options (which need, themselves, be activated by doing certain steps). This would show borders around mostly everything on the UI, though...

If you didn't do it there nor activated Developer Options, it might be if your using an older theme not made for Oreo versions.

Thank you so much SpookDroid! I found the "Show button shapes" option activated, turned it off, and that solved the problem. If they'd used a more obvious, intuitive phrase like "button borders" or "button frames" this would have been so much easier to deal with.
