Does the Droid X resize photos to send by email?

I am using a Verizon Motorola Droid X and Maildroid Pro. When I take a photograph with my phone the photograph goes into the phone Gallery. When I select the photograph in the gallery and they choose Share and then choose Maildroid to send an email message the photograph is attached to the Maildroid message. The photograph size is 1Mb which is a really big file.

When I send the email to a person and that person receives the email it takes forever for the photograph to display. The same is true when someone sends me a photograph that is received through Maildroid. Is the phone suppose to downsize the image file to a smaller size so it displays properly when the email message is received?

If I remember correctly when I send a photograph taken with my Droid X with a text message the phone says it is resizing the image.
