I picked up a Nexus 7 earlier this week, and even had time to outfit it with some custom wallpaper:

Nexus 7: An Android device by Tracker-Backer, on Flickr

Any suggestions on what apps would be good choices for me? I'm a programmer by trade. And a classically-trained student musician. And I have interests in photography, trains (both real and model), and fountain pens. I also like (as you may have gathered from the custom wallpaper) visual puns and other sight-gags, and so my Mac, Linux, and (at work) WinDoze desktops are full of subverted and subversive icons, and even a humorous case mod.

Hmm. Not so sure I'd be inclined to scan an unidentified QR code even if I had a QR reader installed (and if my Nexus came with one built in, I don't see it).

I come by my suspicion of online "surprise packages" honestly: aside from running into the occasional bit of malware, I also was once led by a random search (maybe early Google, maybe HotBot, might have even been Alta Vista) directly into the text of a short story that turned out to be snuff-porn, without even being aware that I'd been led to a site featuring S&M art and fiction. Aside from the browser-traps that had me closing ad windows for several minutes, the story was so shocking in its subject matter, yet so well-written, that I was mentally numb for days.

HotBot? Man, you're dating yourself there. :-)

If I'm dating myself with HotBot, I'm dating myself even more with AltaVista!

Then again, I make my living writing code for IBM Midrange systems, and my favorite implement for doing so is a real terminal (specifically, an IBM 3477, 3487, 3488, or 3489). And I'm a living example of a comic relief entry in the glossary of Joan Hughes' classic PL/I textbook, PL/I Structured Programming:
Optimist: A programmer who codes in ink.
I not only code in ink, but with fountain pens.

Assuming I don't already have a QR scanner I don't know about, which one is best on the Nexus 7, given that it only has a fairly low-res front camera, and no back camera? And that I'd like to know where a link is going to take me, before it actually takes me there.

My OTG cable arrived today. (Why doesn't anybody stock them locally? Came up empty at Staples, Office Depot, Fry's, BestBuy, and MicroCenter!) When I got home, I was able to successfully use both a USB keyboard and a USB mouse (not both at the same time) with the Nexus.

Then, I went down to the local library, and downloaded both the free Nexus Photo Viewer and the $2.99 Nexus Media Importer. Took along a thumb-drive with some JPEGs on it, so that I could verify connectivity with the free app before I spent $3 of my free credit on the paid app.

They perform as advertised, and then some: they can read my thumb drive, and a hard disk backup appliance, beautifully, and without having to root the tablet. Kudos to the developer.

I'm in the same boat as you, since I got a Xoom while ago & I'm always looking for good apps to help me with the college . Not to mention, we both share an interest in Fountain Pens.

If you are looking for a QR Reader, try QR Droid , its really good, it let you decode images without using the camera to scan them (pick a picture & it will scan it for QR) , It also lets you create your own Codes (number, email, contact, url, even notes) .
Its a great app, I have been using it for a over a year now !

Also, if you are using multiple cloud storage services (DropBox , SkyDrive, Drive, Box, ....etc) check ES File Explorer, its a File Manager (from what I read, it can as a root explorer, never tried that, since I'm not rooted) , have cloud integration , also can pair to other devices via bluetooth & manage it (copy, cut files ...etc) & it can connect to servers (haven't tried it though)

EverNote, its a cross platform note app , really helpful if you take a lot of notes , it backbacks up your notes (learned that lesson the hardway) & Syncs them between your multiple devices (Phone, tablet, desktop ... or anything with a web browser & an internet connection)

One more thing, last year the writers here in androidcentral were doing "most used apps of 2011" & joshua mentioned a couple of apps he uses for practice & tuning musical instruments, check the link :

If I came across anything useful, I let you know
