This is another form of the whole "gmail app vs. HTC Sense Email app" discussion.

Is there a way to remove the HTC Sense Email widget and replace it with a GMail widget...or, is there a way to point the Sense widget to use the Gmail app?

Forgive me if this is a common question.

    Yes.
There is a separate widget for the gmail app.
There is also a widget in the market called 'Gmail unread count' that links to the gmail app and also displays the unread count as part of the icon.

Thanks, and can I replace the stock widget with this gmail widget?

Yep. You can add and remove any of the widgets/icons on each of the home screens.
